#1. When he was 11, he won the coveted Bobby Charlton Soccer Schools National Skills competition. The win in the competition earned him a trip to Barcelona, where he drew the attention of Manchester United soccer talent scout.
#2. When he was 16, he dropped out of school and started playing for Manchester United junior team. Two years later, he played his first pro game with Manchester United at the age of 18. In the Manchester United senior team, he slowly earned the reputation of executing great free kicks which led to goals often at critical times of the games.
#3. Manchester United won the Premier League championship both in the years 1996 and 1997. But for Beckham the year 1997 was of importance because he was voted as the Young Player of the Year and finished second in voting for the overall Player of the Year award.
#4. Despite failing to retain the Premier League title in the year 1998, Beckham was called for the England World Cup Football Squad, and he signed a five-year contract worth $12.5 million with Manchester United.
#5. Beckham 1998 World Cup match against Argentina became the turning point for his career where he was given a red card for kicking Argentina's Diego Simeone just minutes into the second half with the score tied 2-2. In the end England was eliminated in the second round and Beckham met criticism from the media and public. He was not immune to criticism and publicly apologized, saying, according to Sports illustrated " I will always regret my actions. I want every fan to know how deeply sorry I am"
#6. Beckham reached super fame when he began dating Victoria "Posh Spice" Adams in 1997. The Couple sold the pictures of their wedding to OK! magazine for $2.2 million.
